Build-Your-Own Axle Kits

ATTENTION: PLEASE READ ALL OF THE BELOW INFORMATION CAREFULLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO ORDER A “BUILD-YOUR-OWN” AXLE KIT.

Our “Build-Your-Own” axle kits include all of the needed parts to fabricate an axle to your required specifications. The kits include:

The appropriate size of Axle Tubing cut to an 84” length (longer can be special ordered), which allows for hub face dimensions in excess of 91”. For reference, an 87” hub-face is fairly normal for trailers that are 96” wide at the fenders/tires, but this will vary based on the tire & wheel set up you are planning to use.

The spindle ends with the required washers, nuts & cotter pins or retainers.

– The idler hubs or brake drums (including bearings/seals/grease caps) & brake assemblies (if purchasing a “brake” axle)

The spring seats, springs, and all attaching parts for the suspension, including the required hangers.

For simplicity reasons these kits are sold w/ 26” double eye leaf springs & “standard height” suspension parts, set up for single axle use on the 3500#, and tandem axle (35” spacing) use on the 6000# & 7000# kits. If you want to do a different setup (i.e. Tandem or Single), spacing, height, or desire heavier duty suspension parts &/or springs, please call and discuss these options with our staff. Our axle specialist can be reached @ 410-414-3625. We can “customize” these kits to fit your need, if you can share your needs with us, we can customize a kit just for your specific application.

Please note that the building of an axle should only be attempted by persons with a high level of welding skill/experience, & a good deal of mechanical ability. The quality of the welds must be high, in order to ensure safety for both the trailer operator and the general public.

When you are ready to build your axle, you will need to know 3 key measurements; Outside of Frame (where the axle Spring Hangers will be placed), so you can determine what your Spring Center dimension will be, and the Hub Face (where the wheel bolts to the hub) which is normally where the center of the tire will be (from one to the other) as it relates to the frame & fender clearance. Once you determine the desired dimension for the Hub Face, you can calculate the tube length you will need to start with, depending on the type of spindle (Straight or Drop) by subtracting the correct amount from the Hub Face measurement. See the following information regarding the amount to subtract.

3.5K (D35) Axles: For determining the tube length needed (after cutting), start with the desired “hub-face” measurement, and subtract 7.25″ for straight 3500#, or 11.0″ for drop 3500# standard spindles. Example: For an 87″ hub-face with straight spindles, you would need a 79.75″ tube after cutting.

6K & 7K (D60 & D70) Axles: For determining the tube length needed (after cutting), start with the desired “hub-face” measurement and subtract 10.5″ for straight 6000-7000#, or 14.75″ for drop 6000-7000# standard spindles. Example: For an 87″ hub-face with straight spindles, you would need a 76.5″ tube after cutting.

It is important to note that most axles of this type are “cambered”, and If you desire to have camber, you will need to bend (or have it bent) the tubing with a slight bow (upwards) in the middle. Camber will help with tire wear when your trailer is loaded, by causing the tire tread to be more perpendicular to the road surface. The tubing provided in our kit(s) is not pre-bent to achieve camber. Additionally, before you start welding your axles, you will need to decide if your axles will be “under-slung” (springs under) or “over-slung” (springs above). This is important to determine where the spring seats go (above or below), as well as the brake flange orientation (for 6/7K 5-bolt flange; the odd bolt goes to the top). Under-slung axles generally allow for a lower deck height, but require a higher positioned fender to allow for clearance at the top of the tire. Over-slung axles provide for a higher deck height & are commonly used on “deck-over” trailers where the bed extends “over” the tires. Additionally, after cutting the tube to length, both ends of the tubing should be chamfered in order to provide a “V” groove for welding the spindle to the tube.
